Towards the digital culture of continuing education: challenges and opportunities

Towards the digital culture of continuing education - Avanzada 7

The cycle of studies has different phases, say 'natural': primary, secondary and vocational or university training. Until not too many years ago, reaching this point gave great chances of accessing the labor market under very interesting conditions. Having a university degree was synonymous with career and job success.

University education: insufficient without specialization

Continuing education is a new modality in the way in which teachers teach their students the subjects. If 20 years ago the classes were based on the master class, where the teacher limited himself to exposing the syllabus while the students took notes and, more or less, they had to demonstrate in the exams that they had memorized it correctly. this training had a big point: it did not promote a proactive attitude of the students to interpret the words of the teacher.

The new modes of education that have arisen in the network - such as distance learning and online universities - have brought about a substantial change. In many schools, the method of the master class has been replaced by a method based on continuous assessment, the result of continuous training. It is no longer a question of gambling everything in an exam, but of demonstrating that throughout the course all the competences of that subject are assumed in a progressive manner.

The novelty lies in the fact that not only is a university degree or a higher level of professional training necessary, but also a commitment to ongoing training, even during the race, or during summer breaks. Thanks to the network, the range or possibilities for continuous training both online and in person throughout adult life is almost endless.

The options for continuing education

Once finished the unviersity degree or the higher degree in professional training, we can consider ouselves very fortunate to have achieved a very high level of knowledge in the material that we have studied. The university remins the necessary pillar in the professional career.

The continuous training must have two phases. The first must be, without a doubt, what I want to study now and how it relates to the career. In other words: there must be coherence between the university degree or professional training and the next course. It will not do any good to have completed a Degree in Phychology and opt for a free course on veterinary medicina or take a master's degree in international logistics. Decision making has to lead us to open a path towards a specialization. The available options that we have, to carry out continuous training are the following.

Postgraduate and Masters

The continuation of the degree is the most logical. Continuing education should begin from here, for the realization of a first university specialization that supposes a logical continuation of the degree towards the professional career that we want.

You must bear in mind that the postgraduate degree is a specialization or update of the degree and has an evident work orientation. In addition, postgraduates have less teaching content and, in some cases, can be accessed without having a university degree thanks to the possibility of doing an entrance test.

The masters, on the other hand, have the purpose of acquiring a specialization much higher than what can be achieved with the postgraduate course. Many of these masters include a delicate part to academic research, which allows us to give our curriculum a clar prestige that will shine in case of choosing a job.

MOOCs

The Internet has generated a new type of online courses that offer a new possibility of online continuing education. This is the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) and these are short courses that can be taken online and for those who do not need to have previous training.

Although these courses are planned as advanced online seminars that touch on interesting topics and can serve as specializations on a specific topic. For example, if we have pursued a journalism career, conducting a MOOC course on solidarity journalism, the viral dissemination of news on the Internet or journalism in a foreign language, can give us some skills that may be useful in the future.

As we have said, most of these courses can be done free of charge, the success and demand of them have made many courses become paid or available with subscriptions. The payment of the course gives right to exams and recognition by the university that organizes it.

Specialized training centers

Sometines continue with academic training through the university channels can involve a large financial outlay or, not find the specialization we are looking for. To meet this demand, these are centers that offer tailor-made training courses to individuals and workers.

These centers aim to promote continuous training among workers, so that they can take on new knowledge that allows them to deal with business changes, know a new tool that can be useful in their daily tasks at work or even in their lives, or train workers in the use of a new technology.l
